I guess we all hit that age where we feel like we need to have a place to get away. For someone in their mid 20′s who was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth, that does not exactly leave a whole lot of options. Two places have always caught my eye. Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and Fairbanks, Alaska. A lot of people (especially those who currently live in Alaska) would tell me that 1) I am crazy for even thinking about this because its expensive and not worth it or 2) its not worth its because of the mosquitoes and lack of everything, etc. Those same people seem to be very pessimistic about everything. Although I was born and raised in the state of Texas, I lived in Glendive, Montana for a year where it gets down below -20 degrees during the winter, the lakes and rivers freeze over, and you can barely drive on the roads. I am not claiming that its gives me the right to get respect or anything, just saying that I realize how cold that can be and although I have never see anything colder than -35, I really do not plan on being in Alaska for Winter anyway. The point is that with as little cost as possible, I plan to drive up there and scope land out (June 2012), gather materials (May 2013) and build a log cabin (summer 2013). My goal is purely to document and inspire. I hope that what I do here can help those who feel as lost as I do sometimes. I will not be alone in the process as I have others who are interested. I do not recommend anyone try this on their own.
